Maxie Carlton Clippard, Jr.
The Last Romanco

Maxie Carlton Clippard, Jr., 91, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Maxie was so proud of his 42 years he played fast pitch softball. He loved to talk to anyone who would listen about his glory years and remembered his games in amazing detail. Maxie started playing for the Romancos as a teenager and was honored to be inducted into the Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in Burlington.

He retired from J. P. Stevens at age 62. He started working in the mills part-time at age 16. It was recognized by Stevens that he had a special talent for fixing looms, and he was made "Loom Fixer Instructor". He always enjoyed showing other employees how to fix looms and would often tell us about it. He was proud of his job and we were proud of him. We all got our work ethic from him. We will forever miss him and we know, one day, we will see him again in Heaven.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, he was born April 16, 1927. He was the son of the late Maxie Carlton Clippard and Annie Green Matthews Clippard. Maxie was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Orevia Whitby Clippard, and their son, Dennis Clippard.

Maxie is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Brewer and her husband, Kim, of Roanoke Rapids, and Sandra Carpenter and her husband, Dewey, of Louisburg; two sons, Maxie Clippard, III and his wife, Joy, and Randy Clippard, both of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Julie Rooker, John Clippard, Christopher Clippard, Brian Mullis, Michael Clippard, Steven Carpenter, Lisa Carpenter, Brett Clippard, and 11 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 7:00-8:30 on Saturday, September 22, at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services, 731 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, and other times at his son Maxie's home.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 23, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel with Pastor Steven Tondee officiating.
